City of Stairs by Robert Jackson Bennett

.

☆☆☆

Bulikov is a peculiar city: once city of the gods, now capital of an oppressed State, where seeds of rebellion are born. It is right in the middle of one rebellious plan, that Ambassador Shara, come from Saypur to investigate the death of an esteemed collegue, finds herself.
The gods should all be dead, killed hundreds of years ago by Saypur's army thanks to a secret and deadly weapon. But things too strange are happening, and Shara suspects some god must still be around, and the rebels are trying to bring them back. If they succeded, Bulikov and the Continent would once again reign, and Saypur would be back to the enslaved state it used to be in before the war. Shara will put to a good use all her unique knowledge of the divine, to unravel the mystery and save the day, so that peace can finally be made between the two States.

An adventurous story and a complex setting, I just think that the relationships between the characters were somewhat poor, and the questions were answered all at once, which I personally don't really appreciate.

Thanks to Netgalley and Crown Publishing for the preview!

Noah, by Darren Aronofsky & Ari Handel

.

☆☆☆☆

I am no great fan of graphic novels, but I loved this one! The illustrations are wonderful, and the story is really powerful.

Noah dreams of endless rain.
Biblical myths and personal characterization are intertwined and the result is somehow unexpected.

The city of Babylon.
Noah tries to warn the inhabitans.
The Flood has come.
Noah is a very torn man, and on his battle to save the world from its inhabitants' lack of humanity, he surely loses his own.

Noah is sure God's plan is to wipe all human beings out.
All one can hope for, is for him to realize he's loved and forgiven nonetheless, and finally find peace in the arms of his own family.
Too bad there was no rainbow!

The new land, after the waters have receded.
Peace?

Thanks to Netgalley and Diamond Book Distribution for the preview.

Murder Mysteries - Neil Gaiman & P.Craig Russell

.

☆☆☆☆

Based on the original tale "Murder Mysteries" by Neil Gaiman, this is a great graphic novel!

There's a story within a story: a man tells his memories to a young guy. Normally I like this kind of story-telling, but in this case I must say the piece of the young guy added nothing to the "real" core of this tale. I had the same feeling reading the text-only version, so I guess it has everything to do with the original idea.

There are angels, in a past very far away, trying to figure out right and wrong and love and death and decision-making and plotting and, eventually, they face the big question: is God really just?

The artwork is clear enough, and easy to read.

Thanks to Netgalley and Diamond Book Distribution for this preview!

A Conspiracy Of Alchemists, by Liesel Schwarz

More about A Conspiracy of Alchemists
A Conspiracy Of Alchemists by Liesel Schwarz
☆☆

This book shows, in my opinion, very good ideas: alchemists, warlocks, absinth fairies, nightwalkers and oracles live and fight in a steampunk world. From Paris to Oxford, to Genoa, Venice, Vienna, Bucharest and finally to Constantinople a two-hundred-year-old warlock tries to save the oracle from the Alchemists who want her for dark purposes.
Anyway, I think the story was a bit too predictable and I did not like very much the fanfiction style of the novel. Moreover, my copy was full of mistakes.

Thanks to Netgalley and Random House Publishing Group for the preview.

One For The Books, by Joe Queenan

One For The Books - Joe Queenan

☆☆☆

“The average American reads four books a year, and the average American finds this more that sufficient.”
These are the first words of the book “One for the books”, by Joe Queenan.
The thought of anyone thinking that reading just four books a year is sufficient horrifies any Reader-with-capital-R.
Joe Queenan is such a Reader: he reads always, there are books in every single room of his house, starts reading any book that seems promising and has read many which did not (and were not).
He speaks to any other Reader, sure to be fully understood in his passion and compulsion towards books.
Funny, witty and only sometimes a bit ostentatious.

Thanks to Penguin Book (USA) and Netgalley for providing a copy of the book.

The Time Keeper, by Mitch Albom

The Time Keeper - Mitch Albom

☆☆☆☆

A very long time ago, a man had the idea to try and keep time: he started doing so by means of sticks, sun and water. But for all his unique knowledge, he discovered he could not control, change or stop time.
Trying to delay his beloved wife’s death, he challenged the gods and in return for his folly he was banished in a cave for the longest of times, condemned to hear the women and men in the world forever wishing for time to stop, or to last longer.
Eventually, his freedom is granted upon the accomplishment of a task: he must teach the true meaning of time to a young girl and an old man. He owns now a magical hourglass, that he can use to slow and even to stop time, which he does in order to complete his mission and be free.
A touching novel by Mitch Albom, a story about the value and meaning of time and life, about the past, the present and the future of each person.

Thanks to Hyperion and NetGalley for providing a copy of the book.

One ghost per serving, by Nina Post

One ghost per serving - Nina Post

☆ ☆ ☆

The spirit who used to possess him, Rex, wants him to be his human sponsor at a self-help gathering of spirits willing to stop possessing humans.

Gather around, my grandchildren...

.

 ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

... and listen closely, while I tell you the wondrous story of Bijan and Manijeh.

A sweet fairy tale and beautiful pictures bring us to ancient Persia and its magic.

A brave knight, a king's son, falls in love with a beautiful princess. Ufortunately, theirs is a forbidden love, because she is the enemy king's daughter. The brave knight is captured and imprisoned behind a rock so big and heavy, that it can't be moved, and the princess is banished from her kingdom. But all isn't lost: the prince is rescued by his father's bravest knight, helped by the princess.

The tale has hidden wise meanings, as any fairy tale has, which are clearly and simply explained in the last few pages of the book, helping the reader grasp an important truth: wherever and whenever men come from, thay feel the same.

Getting a taste for the bard

.
 ☆ ☆ ☆

***

The purpose of this book is to let people who fear Shakespeare, stop fearing him and start to appreciate the greatest English poet of all times. It is a book for those people who normally choose TV over books.
That's why all through the book Shakespeare is easily compared to a soap-opera scriptwriter, and all his dramas and plays are compared to modern day soap-operas.

Whoever, like myself, loves Shakespeare and his work, is going to be shocked by such statements. Since this book does not add a thing to other works about Shakespeare, I wouldn't suggest anyone who has a passion for the great writer read it.

The second half of the book deals a lot with syllables and metrics, Elizabethan language, poetry tricks and subtleties... with plenty of examples and a technical language that will possibly scare all those readers who just convinced themselves that Shakespeare was easy to read and to understand.
I believe that it is not at all necessary to dissect "Macbeth", to grasp the drama in it, nor to inspect "Midsummer's night's dream", to feel its magic. Shakespeare wins one's heart today as he did 400 years ago: through one's heart and gut, much more than through one's brain.

I think this book started with a noble intent, but was not able to keep the promise.

Thanks to Icon Books for the reading.
