History does not tend to the better, Doc, it does not, it does not. We imagine so because events have produced our glorious selves. Think, however. Put aside the romantic legends and look at the facts. The average Frenchman in 1800 was no more unfree than the average Englishman. The French Empire could have brought Europe together, and could have been liberalised from within, and there might have been no World War I in which Western civilization cut its own throat. Because that's what happened, you know. We're still busy bleeding to death, but we haven't far to go now.

La storia non tende al meglio, Doc, non lo fa, non lo fa. A noi piace immaginare che sia così, perché il succedersi degli eventi ha portato alla nostra gloriosa comparsa. Ma pensa. Lascia stare le leggende romantiche e dai un'occhiata ai fatti. L'uomo medio, nella Francia del 1800, non era meno libero dell'uomo medio in Inghilterra. L'Impero francese avrebbe potuto unire l'Europa, avrebbe potuto essere liberalizzato dall'interno, avrebbe potuto non esserci la Prima Guerra Mondiale, nel corso della quale il mondo occidentale si è tagliato la gola. Perché è quello che è succeso, sai. Stiamo ancora sanguinando, non ci resta più molto tempo ormai.
